1. How did you end up working in the tourism industry?
From small days I would love to travel & see the world. Also loved the sound of the French Language. It so happen my father was working for Air France in Sri Lanka. All this made me to learn the French language & qualify myself as an IATA / UFTAA Travel Consultant, eventually joining Sri Lankan Air lines & then a DMC company in Sri Lanka.
2. What inspired you to start this company?
After working at Sri Lankan airlines & another three more DMC companies in Sri Lanka I was not contend with myself. Things were not moving as per my liking. My dream was to be the head of the company where ever I would be working. This made me have a go in opening up Acme Travels with the help of my friends & family.
3. Describe your first sale/customer.
My first customer were clients who walked in to the company & I was so happy to close the sale & became so good at it ended up making several sales in that particular year for the DMC company I worked with. It gave me a very great feeling closing sales & seeing happy customers after a tour.
4. What was your first tour like – and what has changed compared to your most recent?
We started very small with only three people in the company and we had to do everything. It was challenging but after 22 years now we have grown to have fifteen people and over 40 others working on regular freelance basis.
5. What part of the company are you most proud of and why?
Creating revenue making channels and having human beings make a living, this inspires me quite a lot. We have been able to do this constantly this makes us happy and contend.
6. What do you feel sets your company apart from other DMC’s?
We try to deliver clients an experience beyond their expectations this has help us grow at a decent pace without trying to become a factory dealing with tourists. We rather go for quality than quantity is our moto.
7. What does a standard working day look like for you?
First I would do my routine meditation and exercise in the morning as I am a firm believer in looking after your own body before doing anything else in life. Then I would set off to work and even end up working late until 21h00 if it is required.
8. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The opportunity to make things move & the possibility to serve humanity another day.
9. What keeps you up at night?
I take life as it comes but always do my best & leave the rest to God. As humans we can only try our best in every endeavour. As such I sleep well and value my sleep very much.
10. What other CEO’s do you look up to and why?
Mr. Steve Jobs Apple former CEO. How he created something out of nothing & the way he manged the company.
11. where do you see the company in 5 years?
It’s positioning itself well at the moment. I would like is to see the momentum taken forward & to be ahead in using modern technology in operations. As this keeps on changing at a very fast pace & the company has to adopt very quickly to these new changes.
