Culture

The culture of Jordan is based on Arabic and Islamic elements with significant Western influence. The Jordanian Kingdom had always been the intersection of the three continents of the ancient world and always seemed to have a form of diversity at any given point due to its location. Notable aspects of the culture include the music of Jordan and an interest in sports, particularly football and basketball as well as other imported sports, mainly from western Europe and the United States.

Climate

The climate in Jordan varies greatly. Generally, the further inland from the Mediterranean, greater contrasts in temperature occur and the less rainfall there is. The country’s average elevation is 812 m (2,664 ft). The highlands above the Jordan Valley, mountains of the Dead Sea and Wadi Araba and as far south as Ras Al-Naqab are dominated by a Mediterranean climate, while the eastern and northeastern areas of the country are arid desert. Although the desert parts of the kingdom reach high temperatures, the heat is usually moderated by low humidity and a daytime breeze, while the nights are cool.
Summers, lasting from May to September, are hot and dry, with temperatures averaging around 32 °C (90 °F) and sometimes exceeding 40 °C (104 °F) between July and August  The winter, lasting from November to March, is relatively cool, with temperatures averaging around 13 °C (55 °F).[90] Winter also sees frequent showers and occasional snowfall in some western elevated areas.

Currency:
The Jordanian dinar (Arabic: دينار‎‎; code: JOD; unofficially abbreviated as JD) is the currency of Jordan. It is also widely used alongside the Israeli shekel in the West Bank. The dinar is divided into 10 dirham, 100 qirsh (also called piastres) or 1000 fulus.

Languages:
Arabic is Jordan’s official language. Everyone in the country, including the minority communities, speak Arabic in their day to day dealings. It is, however, worth noting that English is also widely used especially by the learned people and besides, most radio programs, television shows, and services are broadcasted in English. Other languages spoken in the country are German and French.

Travel Insurance:
When buying your travel insurance, always check the small print – some policies specifically exclude ‘dangerous activities’, which could be anything from scuba diving to horse riding. You should check whether the medical coverage is on a pay first, claim later basis and, more importantly, ensure that your medical coverage includes the cost of medical evacuation.

Visa:
The Jordanian Government has waived visa fees for all non-restricted nationalities coming through Jordanian tour operators whether travelling individually or in groups. The visa fee is waived on the condition that the traveler/travelers spend a minimum of two consecutive nights in Jordan.

Certain nationalities require an entry visa to be obtained prior to travel. Please select from the drop-down list below to see which nationalities require visa clearance. The below list is meant solely as a useful tool and the data within it is subject to change without prior notice. It is recommended that you check with the Jordanian diplomatic mission in your country prior to travel to ensure that you have all the necessary paperwork for travel.
